Dr. Smith joined the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Southern California in 2014. He came from the University of Michigan, where he received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering under the direction of Lutgarde Raskin and Steven J. Skerlos. His PhD research focused on anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) treatment of domestic wastewater, emphasizing the membrane biofilm’s role in treatment as a strategy to improve performance at low temperatures. Dr. Smith received his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Marquette University in 2009.
